Producing the portrait
I start with producing a pencil sketch composition of the pet based on the preferred photograph. This initial pencil work will not be visible at completion.
Choice of paper colour is a primary decision and is influenced by the coat or fur colour to enhance impact and contrast. I use high quality paper with a grain. This takes the pencil pigment especially well enabling me to build up layers of rich colours creating depth in the fur.
To begin composing the portrait I start with drawing the eyes.
